Kerner, Bhat Log 1st Singles Wins

ATHENS, Ga. -- Freshmen Markus Kerner and Sunay Bhat both won their first collegiate singles matches Sunday to close the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.

Kerner defeated Portland's Kent Andreason 6-3, 6-3 in an additional consolation match.Bhat earned his win 6-4, 6-4 over Paul Cisti of Charlotte.

Only one other Vol played Sunday with freshman Sean Karl losing to Cahit Kapukiran of Stetson 6-3, 6-2.

The Vols return to fall action starting Thursday with the SEC Fall Classic in Nashville, Tenn. The tournament represents the start of the competition for most of the returning players, including All-American juniors Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese.

LATVIA BEATS FINLAND
World No. 36 Ernests Gulbis defeated Juhu Paukku 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the eventual 3-2 team victory for Latvia over Finland.

Libietis did his part to secure the victory for his homeland of Latvia. He and Gulbis won their doubles match Saturday.
