Athens, Ga. - The Tennessee men's tennis team won three singles matches and all three of its doubles matches Friday, on the first day of competition at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by the University of Georgia.

"We started the tournament off with some good wins early this morning," head coach Chris Mahony said. "We're looking forward to tomorrow which should be a great day of competition."

David Baxendine got the Vols off to a good start with his victory over Vanderbilt freshman Nick Cromydas 6-3, 6-1 in the Division II bracket. Baxendine meets Stefan Tell of Florida, Saturday morning at 8 a.m. in the second round. Kiril Tcherveniachki received a bye into the second round of the Division II bracket and will meet IIIie Babinciuc of Southeast Louisiana. Baxendine and Tcherveniachki teamed up to defeat Brent Goedjen and Hunter Mills 8-4 in Division II doubles. The UT tandem meets Georgia State's Clarence Boyd and Frank Suro in Saturday's second round.

Rawl Martin won his third match of the season when he defeated Mercer's Jason Glow in in straight-sets 6-1, 6-0. Martin meets Jacek Twarowski of Georgia State in the second round of the Division III bracket. Johnny Thornton also advanced in Division III grinding out a victory over Tennessee Tech's James Bennett 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Thornton meets Nathan Starr of Mercer, Saturday in the second round. Martin and Thornton then teamed up in Division II doubles to defeat Georgia Tech's Jordan Delass and George Gvelesiani 8-4. The Vols' pair meets The Citadel's Derek Jose and Ananda Sawmynaden in the second round.

Bobby Cameron dropped his Division I first round match to Vanderbilt's Ryan Preston 6-2, 6-1. The UT sophomore will play Saturday morning in the consolation bracket. Kaden Hensel won the first set of match but was unable to hold on and eventually fell to South Alabama's Dias Doskarayev 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Cameron and Hensel were able to put their disappointment behind them though and came back in the afternoon to defeat The Citadel's Daniel Dossetor and James Eason 8-4 in doubles. The UT sophomores meet Duke's Joey Atas and Jonathan Stokke, ranked No. 40 in doubles, in Saturday's second round.
