Tennessee sophomore Matt Brewer won his only match Saturday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., to advance to the second day of Prequalifying for the ITA All-American Championships.
After receiving a bye into the second round, Brewer defeated Ball State's Jarrod Epkey 6-1, 6-2. The UT sophomore faces Anders Dalskov in the third round Sunday. Brewer will need to win twice Sunday to advance to the qualifying portion of the All-American Championships.
UT freshmen William Lang and Jeremy Tweedt dropped their only matches Saturday. Tweedt fell in the first round to Achim Ceban of San Diego State, 6-4, 6-4. Lang was awarded a bye into the second round but lost a three-set match to Xavier Barajas-Smith of Sacramento State.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships include five days of qualifying events that precede the October 4-7 main draw. A 128-player prequalifying tournament takes place Sept. 29-30. This feeds into 128-player and 64-doubles team qualifying tournaments Oct.1-3, which then feeds into the 64-player, 32-doubles team main draws.
J.P. Smith and Davey Sandgren begin play Monday in the qualifying round. Chris Racz is already in the Main Draw and won't have to play until Oct. 4 because the UT sophomore won the ITA Summer National Championships.
