Tennessee senior Matt Brewer defeated Illinois State's Filip Miljevic 6-4, 6-4 to advance into the second round of qualifying at the ITA All-American on Monday in Tulsa, Okla.
Brewer earned a spot in the qualifier by finishing runner-up at the ITA/USTA National Summer Championships in August.
"It's great for Matt and a good win against a good opponent," Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "Matt got into this tournament by playing so well this summer, and he's taking full advantage of the opportunity."
Brewer faces Artem Ilyushin of Mississippi State on Tuesday. Ilyushin beat Ryan Thatcher of Stanford 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 in his first qualifying match.
Brewer needs to win two more matches to gain entry into the main draw, which begins Thursday. Juniors John-Patrick Smith and Boris Conkic automatically qualified into the main draw.
