The Tennessee men's tennis team traveled to Memphis, Tenn., Wednesday to participate in the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Tennis Championships at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
This is going to be a challenging tournament," head coach Chris Mahony said. "I believe it to be the strongest regional in the country. The team is looking forward to going there and competing against a tough draw and continuing to improve."
David Baxendine comes to Memphis on a hot streak. The senior from Surrey, England, won five matches last weekend enroute to the championship of the Flight "B" singles draw at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational.
Sophomore Bobby Cameron, ranked No. 109 in the ITA singles rankings, received a No. 17 seed for the tournament. Cameron won his last two matches at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational last weekend. Kaden Hensel, Ben Rogers and Kiril Tcherveniachki are unseeded but all three had victories at Georgia Tech. Rawl Martin and Johnny Thornton are seeing their first action since the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
The Vols coaches have entered three doubles teams into competition. Rogers who received All-America honors last season for his doubles play is scheduled to partner with Hensel. Hensel and Rogers were given a No. 9 seed. Baxendine and Tcherveniachki are paired together for the third straight tournament. Martin and Thornton are the other Vol doubles entry.
The tournament starts Wednesday with qualifying singles and is scheduled to run through Sunday.
