The Tennessee men's tennis team saw four of its members and one of its coaches begin play Monday in the Main Draw of the Knoxville Challenger played in UT's Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center.
Current Vols Chris Racz and Jeremy Tweedt fell to brothers Brian and Dann Battistone 6-2, 6-4 in the first round. William Lang teamed up with Associate head coach and former ATP tour member Chris Woodruff for the doubles tournament. The player-coach tandem fell to the tournament No. 2 seed Michael Russell and Izak Van Der Merwe 6-1, 6-3. Matt Brewer teamed up with former teammate Bobby Cameron. The duo fell to Zach Fleishman and Travis Rettenmaier 6-3, 6-4.
Boris Conkic and Davey Sandgren face current teammate J.P. Smith and former teammate Ben Rogers in the doubles tournament.
Smith is the only current Vol in the singles draw. The Australia native faces Fleishman, currently ranked 145th on the ATP tour, in the first round. Cameron faces former Georgia All-America John Isner Tuesday in singles.
