banquet ... Won Comeback of the Year Award along with Tim Bell at team banquet
... Won Most Improved Athlete Award along with Clint Binder, Rondell Mershon
and Steve Pitlik at team banquet ... Earned All-America honors with a ninth-place
(eighth American), 7,598-point, lifetime-best performance with a furious charge
at the NCAA Outdoors (June 1) ... At the NCAAs, Thompson notched decathlon PRs
in no fewer than six events -- 100m dash (10.89), long jump (22-9), shot put
(50-1 1/4), 110m hurdles (14.87), javelin (164-7) and 1,500m run (4:39.23) ...
Finished the season with one of the top-five Vol marks of the outdoor campaign
in five events -- shot put (first), decathlon (7,598), discus (second), high
jump (fourth) and long jump (fifth) ... Breakout season began with an automatic
qualifier of 7,567 points to win the Trojan Classic decathlon (March 18) ...
At the Trojan Classic, Thompson posted decathon PRs of 46-8 in the shot put,
14.95 in the 110m hurdles and 150-5 in the discus to write his ticket to the
NCAA meet ... With the SEC title on the line, Thompson stepped up for a second-place,
7,242-point finish to help the Vols defend their SEC Outdoor title ... Rode
first-place finishes in the shot put (46-11 3/4) and discus (138-4) to the SEC
decathlon runner-up finish ... Also entered the shot put at SECs, finishing
13th with a 46-1 1/2 mark.
2002-Indoor- Stands fourth on Tennessee’s all-time pentathlon list
with his career-best, 4,080-point effort to notch third at the SEC Indoor meet
(Feb. 22) ... Posted lifetime pentathlon bests in the 60m hurdles (8.25), long
jump (22-4 1/2) and shot put (49-11) ... Also entered the shot put competition
at the SEC Indoors in hopes of scrapping for points, but took 12th with a 47-4
1/4 measurement ... Won the Kroger Invitational Pentathlon with 3,973 points
at Virginia Tech ... Thompson’s winning effort included a pentathlon lifetime
best in the 60m hurdles (8.25).
2001-Outdoor- Named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll...A decathlete with many
strengths, Thompson appears ready to carry on Tennessee’s decathlon legacy...Thompson
ended up with the squad’s fourth-best mark or better in five events--decathlon-7,301
(second); high jump-6-8 3/4 (second), shot put-44-9 (third), long jump-22-2
1/4w (fourth) and discus-148-9 (fourth)...Hit highwater mark with silver-medal,
7,301 performance at the Sea Ray Relays decathlon (April 12) in Knoxville...The
7,301 effort stands as a personal best and a provisional qualifier...At the
Sea Rays, Thompson won the discus (140-4) and took second in the shot put (44-9),
high jump (6-8 3/4) and 400M dash (48.76) to propel him to the runner-up finish...Withdrew
from the SEC Outdoors decathlon after the shot put with a left hamstring strain
suffered in the 100M dash.
2001-Indoor- Offered up the second-best Vol effort of the season in the
pentathlon...Qualified for the USA Indoor Heptathlon but had to withdraw because
of injury...Just one month removed from the football field and Tennessee’s Cotton
Bowl trip, Thompson chalked up a personal-best, second-place, 3,862-point finish
in the Virginia Tech Pentathlon (Feb. 2)...Thompson registered career bests
in the 60M hurdles and 1,000M run to fuel his second-place finish and USA Indoor
qualifier.
2000-Outdoor- Named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll... Took fourth at
the SEC decathlon with a career-best 7,183 points (May 12)... Strongest events
at the SEC decathlon were the high jump (fourth, 6-6 3/4) and pole vault (second,
14-5 1/4)...Competed in the high jump (sixth, 6-4 3/4), pole vault (14-2 3/4)
and the discus (129-8) at the Knoxville Invitational...Competed in the preliminaries
of the 400M dash (50.38) and 110M hurdles (15.77) at the
National Invitational Team Championships...Took seventh in the Florida Relays
decathlon with 6,978 points winning the 400M dash in the process...Started the
outdoor season with a 39-6 mark in the shot put and 158-3 mark in the javelin.
2000-Indoor- Finished eighth with 3,536 points in the Virginia Tech Pentathlon
with a third-place, 6-5 1/2 clearance in the high jump as a strong point...Marked
a 22-5 1/4 mark (fifth) in the long jump and ran a 7.82 in the 55M hurdles preliminaries
at the UT All-Comers Meet...Took seventh in the high jump (6-6) and shot put
(42-0) at the SEC Quad...Cleared 6-6 to finish fourth in the high jump and ran
a fifth-place, 2:13.74 in the 800M run decathlete section to open the sesaon
at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
1999- Redshirted...In the summer, took third in the decathlon with 6,604
points at the USA Junior Nationals....Won James Snow Award at UT’s track banquet
for being the most outstanding freshman academically.
HIGH SCHOOL- Provides more strength to solid decathlon group...State
runner-up in the decathlon...State champion in the 400M dash...Ranked among
the world’s top 100 junior decathletes...Voted Most Outstanding Track Athlete...All-Metro
for track and football...Elected track team captain in senior year...Set
school records in the 400M and decathlon...Part of 4x400M relay team that set
school record...State runner-up in the high jump...Also played basketball...Member
of 2000 Tennessee football squad.
