LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Tennessee track & field teams turned in 11 top-five finishes, including two victories, a pair of runner-up efforts and four NCAA provisional qualifying marks on Saturday, as the Big Orange wrapped up its stay at the Kentucky Invitational at Nutter Field House.
UT Director of Track & Field J.J. Clark was pleased with the work of his squads in their first meet of the young indoor season.
"We had a successful first meet, posted several personal bests and qualifying marks, and came out of the meet healthy," Clark said. "Our teams showed a lot of positive energy, had a solid performance and demonstrated some good team unity in our first meet together. I thought we were able to shake the rust off a little bit today, and I'm excited about the upcoming meets as we prepare for the bigger meets down the road."
Tennessee collected wins and NCAA provisional marks in the women's 800 meters from sophomore Chanelle Price and in the women's mile from senior Phoebe Wright. Price logged a time of two minutes, 6.95 seconds to finish just ahead of Middle Tennessee's Zamzam Sangau (2:07.23). Wright, meanwhile, took the mile in 4:43.50, crossing the line ahead of three-time Olympian Hazel Clark, among others.
Also grabbing NCAA provisional marks with runner-up performances were senior Evander Wells in the men's 200 meters and junior Annie Alexander in the women's shot put. Wells was second only to Georgia's Torrin Lawrence (21.19) in 21.20, while Alexander accepted runner-up acclaim with a throw of 54-7 1/4 behind Florida's Mariam Kevkhishvili (60-7 1/4).
The UT men's 4x400m relay lineup of senior John Hewitt, Wells and seniors Kyle Stevenson and Samdi Fraser posted one of three fourth-place finishes by the Vols. That contingent covered the distance in 3:12.37 to wind up two seconds shy of the provisional standard. The other fourth-place efforts were produced by Wells in the 400m (48.17) and sophomore Robert Rasnick in the pole vault (15-7).
The Lady Vols' 4x4 quartet of sophomore Ellen Wortham, Price, Wright and freshman Kia Jackson snared one of four fifth-place performances by UT. The unit logged a readout of 3:44.63 in its first race together. Also taking fifth for the UT women was senior Jackie Areson in the 3000m (9:39.57), while the Vols included Stevenson in the 200m (21.51) and Fraser in the 400m (48.30).
The UT men and women return to action next weekend, as they take part in the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg on Jan. 22-23.
