The Tennessee men's track and field team got another winning performance from Michael Spooner and received NCAA provisional qualifying marks from Brad Holtz, Joseph Berry, Joseph Franklin and Akeem Hardnett in the final day of competition Saturday at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
The Vols won a total of three events and added or improved six NCAA provisional marks during the two-day meet.
"We had a good second day and a good weekend overall," Tennessee head coach Bill Webb said. "Michael Spooner had a good meet with two personal-bests and the highlight of the second day was Brad Holtz with a personal-best in the pole vault. We had a few near misses that could have made it an even bigger weekend for us, so we'll go back and work on those things as we prepare for the conference meet in three weeks."
Spooner won his second race in as many days with a lifetime-best clocking in the collegiate mile of 4:10.31, which was a three-second improvement over his previous top time. He claimed victory in the collegiate 3,000m on Friday with a career-best time of 8:14.11, which was a 10-second improvement over his previous top time in that event.
Holtz and Berry each cleared NCAA provisional heights in the championship section of the pole vault. Holtz finished tied for second with a lifetime-best 5.30m (17-4.50) clearance, while Berry's mark of 5.20m (17-0.75) earned him a tie for seventh place and equaled the NCAA provisional standard.
Franklin and Hardnett both posted marks that were just within the NCAA provisional threshold. Franklin ran a time of 1:50.24 in the championship section of the 800m to finish seventh overall and sneak across the line just ahead of the 1:50.50 NCAA provisional marker.
Hardnett leaped 15.47m (50-9.25) to claim the tenth-place spot in the championship section of the triple jump. His mark was just longer than the 15.40m (50-6.25) NCAA provisional minimum.
The four additional NCAA marks achieved Saturday give Tennessee a total of nine potential national qualifiers in eight different events.
In other running events, Evander Wells earned a sixth-place finish with a 21.32 clocking in the 200m championship after posting 21.56 in the prelims to qualify for the finals. Joseph Morris and Kyle Stevenson also ran in the prelims, posting times of 22.06 and 22.30, respectively. On Friday, Wells dropped his NCAA provisional time in the 60m from 6.69 to 6.68 en route to an eighth-place finish in that event.
Steve Tobin and Mike Brodsky also competed in the collegiate mile Saturday. Tobin clocked in at a lifetime-best 4:13.40 to finish sixth overall, while Brodsky crossed the finish line 31st in 4:22.83. In the championship section of the 5,000m, Chris Rapp notched a lifetime-best 14:48.78 to finish 15th overall.
The Vols also entered a 4x400 relay team, which finished 15th in the championship section with a clocking of 3:16.78.
In other field event action, Brenard Wilson cleared 2.04m (6-8.25) to finish sixth in the championship high jump, while Matthew Maloney was the top UT finisher in seventh place in the championship weight throw, posting a toss of 18.03m (59-2). Richard Wooten finished one spot behind him with a throw of 18.01m (59-1.25), and Nick Panezich registered a heave of 17.39m (57-0.75) to place 13th.
On Friday, Panezich improved on his existing provisional qualifier in the shot put by more than 31 inches to 18.63m (61-01.50) and moved to fifth in the NCAA this season in the event.
Tennessee takes the weekend of Feb. 13-14 off before returning to action at the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb. 20-21.
