The Tennessee men's track and field team got its 2009 outdoor campaign off to a good start Friday by winning eight events and posting four NCAA regional qualifying marks at the Bulls Invitational in Tampa, Fla. Several Tennessee athletes competed in off events or used the weekend to rest after the indoor season, but those in competition found success at almost every turn.
The meet capped four days of training in the warm weather of southwest Florida for the Vols.
"We had a good week," Tennessee head coach Bill Webb said. "We trained hard, conditioned and made some technical improvements, but I think we were a little worn out by the heat at the end of the week. We managed four regional qualifiers and ended up with a pretty good spring break."
Two Vols posted qualifying marks in the hurdle events as Charlton Rolle ran a time of 14.07 to finish second in the 110m hurdles and John Hewitt clocked in at 52.47 to win the 400m hurdles. Nick Panezich continued his solid year in the shot put by meeting the regional standard with a toss of 17.90m (58-8.75) en route to winning the event.
Joseph Franklin, who barely missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 800m indoors, took the first step in earning a trip to the outdoor championships in the same event by posting a regional-qualifying time of 1:50.20 and earning a win.
Two Vols also earned sprint victories as Joseph Morris won the 100m and 200m with lifetime-best times of 10.59 and 21.38, respectively, while Alan Bachman was first across the line in the 400m at 48.27.
In field event action, Richard Wooten was the top collegian in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 56.45m (185-02) to finish second overall. Panezich was the top UT thrower in the discus, notching a mark of 51.22m (168-00) to finish second as well.
Joseph Berry earned a runner-up finish in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.78m (15-8.25), while Zane Breakiron and Nathaniel Couture made their Tennessee debuts, finishing fourth and fifth in the javelin with throws of 60.11m (197-02) and 57.48m (188-07), respectively.
Tennessee returns to action March 28 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech.
