Martland And Yeager Near Lifetime Best at Arizona Invitational Decathlon

March 26, 2005

Senior Chris Martland piled up 6,849 points, a mere nine points off his lifetime-best total, to close the Arizona Invitational Decathlon Saturday in Tucson, Ariz.

Minnesota's Travis Brandstatter won the event with 7,386 points, a provisional qualifier for the NCAA meet.

Arizona meet officials did not release places or individual event results for either day of the decathlon. These scores are based on the limited results kept by Tennessee head coach Bill Webb.

"Two of our seniors are off to a good start," Webb said. "It's encouraging that we have two guys who will improve a lot. They left a lot of points out on the track and in the field. Chris Martland and Kevin Yeager had enough points left out there that, with some corrections, they'll be close to qualifying for NCAAs. We'll get Chris Helwick and Jangy Addy back with our other guys at the Sea Ray Relays decathlon.

Senior Kevin Yeager finished the 10-event test of endurance with a score of 6,793, 104 points off his career-best total. Senior Alex Hritcu scratched from the second day of the decathlon.

Late results from the Stanford Invitational will be released with results from Saturday's Jim Click Shootout.
