Tennessee Track & Field Team Makes Its Mark On Day Two Of FSU Relays

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The University of Tennessee track & field teams kicked their outdoor campaign into high gear on Friday, claiming victories in six events and carding runner-up efforts in five others on day two of the FSU Relays at Mike Long Track.

The UT men's team charted four triumphs, with three of those coming in running events, and added two runner-up efforts. The Lady Vols snared two victories and had three second-place finishes. The teams also combined for six third-place performances.

Vol senior Samdi Fraser was the first to break the tape, winning the 400 meters in 47.41. Sophomore Emerson Peacock and junior Michael Spooner followed suit, capturing the 800m and 3000m steeplechase in 1:52.55 and a career-best 9:32.13, respectively. Senior Matt Maloney, who redshirted last season due to injury, demonstrated he's back in good from. He secured victory in the javelin throw with a fling of 223-3.

For the Lady Vols, NCAA Indoor champion Phoebe Wright remained undefeated in the 800 meters as a senior. She began her final outdoor campaign by taking the title by 7 1/2 seconds in a time of 2:05.58. Later, sophomore Brittany Sheffey took top honors in the 1500 meters, covering the distance in a personal best 4:22.44.

Both the UT women and men posted runner-up outings in the 4x100m relay. Florida State came out on top in both races, with the Big Orange women's tandem of freshman Kia Jackson, sophomore Ashley Harris, sophomore Ellen Wortham and freshman Martinique Octave covering the distance in 46.07 and the UT men's quartet of senior Kyle Stevenson, senior Evander Wells, Fraser and sophomore Desmond Brown circling the oval in 40.65.

Sophomore Tom Gilmartin picked up the UT men's second runner-up display, trailing Spooner across the line in the steeplechase in a personal-best 9:52.98. The Tennessee women, meanwhile, picked up second-place finishes in the long jump from Wortham at 18-9 and in the discus throw from freshman Aslynn Halvorson with a toss of 150-5.

The Lady Vols collected a trio of bronze results, including sophomore Laquoya Kelly's toss of 161-1 in the hammer throw, junior Holly Kane's personal-best fling of 140-8 in the javelin and senior Chardae Hancock's career-best clocking of 13.96 in the 100m hurdles. The Vols, meanwhile, posted thirds by Stevenson in the 400m (47.76), freshman Breon Dixon in the 800 meters (career-best 1:54.53) and by redshirt freshman Drew Thomas in the open hammer (155-2). Thomas had finished third in the college hammer on Friday night. Former Vol and current UT operations assistant Jim Sexton won tonight's hammer competition with a toss of 191-11.

Tennessee returns to Florida State's oval on Saturday for the final day of competition. Action begins at 10 a.m. and concludes around 4:30 p.m.
