Five Tennessee athletes and two relays notched NCAA regional-qualifying marks Saturday to conclude a very productive Florida Relays for the Volunteers. During the two-day meet, Tennessee added a total of nine new regional qualifiers and saw another athlete improve his existing qualifying mark.
"We got some things accomplished this weekend and we got a look at the facility that will host the SEC Championships," Tennessee head coach Bill Webb said. "We're getting better, but we have some events where we need to be more competitive as the season continues and we get into the SEC and NCAA meets."
Tennessee's top performers Saturday competed primarily in the field events. In both the hammer throw and the pole vault, two Vols punched their tickets to the NCAA Mid-East Regional later this spring. In the hammer throw, Richard Wooten finished fifth with a toss of 58.13m (190-08), while Nick Panezich finished sixth with a top mark of 57.61m (189-0). Panezich, who has already posted qualifying marks in the shot put and discus, will compete at an NCAA regional in three events for the third-consecutive season.
In the pole vault, Joe Berry finished second with a clearance of 5.35m (17-6.5), and Michael Ayers cleared 5.15m (16-10.75) to finish third. Those two athletes will make their second-career appearances at an NCAA regional in the pole vault.
Akeem Hardnett earned a regional berth with a leap of 15.69m (51-1.75) in the triple jump, which was good enough for a third-place finish.
Tennessee's 4x100 relay team of Evander Wells, Desmond Brown, Kyle Stevenson and Joseph Morris ran a time of 40.04 to finish sixth and qualify for NCAA regional competition. The Vols' 4x400 relay unit of Alan Bachman, Nathan Grace, John Hewitt and Stevenson also eclipsed the regional standard in the 4x400 relay, running a time of 3:09.37 to place ninth.
Wells and Panezich posted regional qualifiers on Friday in the 100m and discus, respectively, while Hewitt improved his qualifying time in the 400m hurdles.
Joseph Franklin (800m), Charlton Rolle (110m hurdles) and Panezich (shot put) own qualifying marks from previous meets. Tennessee currently has 13 regional qualifying marks from nine individuals and two relays.
The Vols host the 43rd running of the Sea Ray Relays next week. The Scott Hartman decathlon begins Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. ET and concludes Thursday beginning at 2:30 p.m. Individual events begin Friday at 12:15 p.m. and run through the day on Friday and Saturday.
