Tennessee's high jumpers provided the highlights to a light competitive weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational. The Vols' hammer throwers filled the bill at Georgia's Spec Towns Invitational. Drew Brunson won the high jump with a regional-qualifying, lifetime-best clearance of 6 feet, 11 3/4 inches Saturday in Nashville, Tenn. Halls grad Chris Wilson nabbed silver with a season-best high jump of 6-8 at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
Tennessee accounted for half the top four in the triple jump as Eric Pierce took second with a 48-7 1/2 mark and Alonzo Williams finished fourth with a 45-7 1/4 effort. The Volunteers pulled a similar feat in the javelin. Anthony Immediate finished second in the javelin with a 173-11 measurement. Decathlete Jangy Addy grabbed fourth with a 162-7 mark. Also in the throws, Tim Nguyen upped his lifetime best with a fourth-place, 166-6 mark.
Jeremy Burton's fifth-place, 22.23-second finish paced the Vols in the 200. Brunson finished 12th with a 22.91 clocking.
Jacob Dennis took seventh in the 400 with a 49.08 time.
In the discus, Addy finished 10th with a season-best 137-10 measurement.
Martland (16th, 110-8) and Kevin Yeager (19th, 106-2) also flung the discus.
Pierce's third-place, season-best 23-6 long jump led the Tennesseans on Friday night action at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Addy topped the Vols' quartet of decathletes in the shot put with a 10th-place, 45-5 1/4 measurement Friday night. Helwick (14th, 43-7 3/4), Martland (15th, 43-2 1/2) and Yeager (18th, 40-10 1/2) also contested the shot put.
Tennessee's throwers notched improvement at Georgia's Spec Towns Invitational Saturday in Athens.
In perhaps Tennessee's deepest event, three Vols landed in the top seven in the hammer throw, each registering a regional qualifier. Garland Porter led the Tennessee three with a 209-2 mark to take third. Josh Whisman notched fifth after adding nearly five feet to his previous PR in the hammer. Whisman finished with a 198-7 throw, vaulting to fourth on Tennessee's all-time hammer list. Jim Sexton finished seventh with a 184-1 effort.
Porter added a season-best shot put of 55-3 3/4 to place fourth. Whisman followed in sixth with a shot put of 53-2 3/4. Sexton took fifth in the discus after posting a regional qualifier and lifetime-best fling of 168-7, improving by nearly a whopping 15 feet.
