Tennessee Javelin Throwers Set Tone On Final Day At UCSD Triton Invitational

LAJOLLA, Calif. -- Senior Matt Maloney won the men's javelin throw competition and junior Holly Kane placed third in the women's javelin Saturday night to lead the University of Tennessee track & field team on the final day of the UCSD Triton Invitational.

Maloney, who ranks second in the SEC this season, unleashed a season-best fling of 230 feet, 11 inches to win the competition by a little more than 18 feet over runner-up Tyler Sweet of Akron (212-03). The mark was an improvement over Maloney's previous 2010 best of 226-11 at the Sea Ray Relays two weekends ago.

In the women's javelin, Kane launched the implement 142 feet to card the second best measurement of her career. She ranks third in the SEC this season with a best mark of 142-10. Also competing on Saturday night was UT sophomore Brittany Napoli, who placed sixth at 117-6.

Elsewhere, redshirt freshman Drew Thomas placed 11th in the men's hammer at 176-11, freshman Aslynn Halvorson was 11th in the women's shot put at 42-11 1/2 and junior Minor Bowens was 34th in the men's discus at 146-7. UT operations assistant and former Vol Jim Sexton was sixth in the men's hammer at 197-0.
