Tennessee sophomore Jeff Day won the college steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 3.65 seconds Thursday night to open the Volunteers' annual trip to the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. Day's winning effort stands as a lifetime-best effort and a regional qualifier, the third of the year by a Volunteer steeplechaser.
Day's title bumps Tennessee's all-time Penn Relays win total to 67 since 1949, including both college and championship sections. Doug Brown took sixth with a season-best time of 9:14.17 in the college steeplechase.
Newcomer Tyler DeVault also authored a regional qualifier competing in the championship section of the steeplechase. DeVault finished ninth with a season-best time of 9:04.15. However, Zach Sabatino, owner of the team's best steeplechase time at 8:54.61, hit a barrier about halfway through the race and couldn't continue. His status for the anchor leg of the distance medley relay Friday is unknown.
Tennessee's distance men continued the improvement in the college 5,000. Chris Platt registered a career-best time of 14:29.85 to place 12th in the 5,000. Newcomer Ben Lukowski offered up a season-best time of 14:45.63 to earn 21st in the college 5,000.
Matt Piccarello capped the night with the latest and longest race of them all--the championship 10,000. Piccarello finished 29th in 31:10.22.
Tennessee continues the 111th Penn Relays with a more extensive schedule Friday and Saturday.
