BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The first day of the 2012 USA Junior Track & Field Championships ended particularly well for one Tennessee freshman. Michael Williams, who began his career as a Vol this season, earned a new personal record and a spot in the 400-meter hurdle finals.
Williams finished fourth in the first heat, with the sixth fastest time overall, completing the race in 52.86 seconds. The final takes place Saturday evening at 6:10 p.m. Eastern time.
Jacob Blankenship, who will be joining the pole vault corps at Tennessee for the 2013 campaign, finished third with a height of 16-8.75. He was the top high school performer, bested only by college freshmen from Kansas and Georgia Tech. Blankenship has a personal best of 17-4.50.
Two UT freshman distance runners competed in the 1500 meter prelims. Amirah Johnson ran in the women's race, finishing 21st overall in a time of 4:49.21. Kyle Walter, a freshman on the men's side, ran the distance in 4:05.75. He finished 25th overall.
Incoming freshman Cameron Brown, competing in the men's hammer throw, ended up 21st with a best toss of 173-6 which came on his first attempt. Brown fouled on his second and third tries and did not make it to the finals.
Future Lady Vol Felicia Brown begins her weekend tomorrow, competing in the first rounds of both the 200m and 400m. Cassie Wertman, also an incoming Lady Vol freshman, will compete on Sunday in the shot put.
