Vols Earn Victories at Va. Tech Invitational

The Tennessee men???s track and field team ran to two wins and two NCAA provisional-qualifying times Friday during the first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.

???We are off to a good start,??? head coach Bill Webb said. ???I look forward to some more season and lifetime bests tomorrow (Saturday). We got some good work in today, and we will do the same tomorrow.???

Evander Wells ran to a provisional-qualifying time of 6.23 seconds while winning the 55-meter dash in his first competition of the indoor season. Matthieu Pritchett placed third in the??event by stopping the clock in 6.35. Wells and Pritchett each won their respective preliminary heats and clocked the top-two times in the preliminaries.

Jangy Addy also got his indoor season off to a quick start as he recorded the fastest time during the 55 hurdle preliminaries by stopping the clock in 7.23. Richard Wooten led the Vols in the weight throw with his fifth-place finish and mark of 60-10, and Matthew Maloney earned seventh after throwing the 35-lb. weight 57-0 1/4. Akeem Hardnett recorded a leap of 48-4 3/4 to take fifth in his first triple jump of the year.

Blake Jones clocked a 6.60 time in the preliminaries of the 55 dash.

The Vols also had competitors in events that are not contested at every meet. Nathan Grace finished ninth in the 300 with his time of 34.70 and was followed in that event by Samdi Fraser???s 12th-place, 34.87 finish. John Hewitt placed ninth in the 500 in 1:05.79 with Justin Hansen placing 15th in the event with his time of 1:06.98.

Michael Ayers and Brad Holtz continued their preparations for the heptathlon by competing in the 55 dash and 55 hurdles. Ayers ran to a time of 6.78 in the 55 and 8.59 in the 55 hurdles, while Holtz stopped the clock in 6.98 during the 55 and 8.14 in the 55 hurdles.
