Tennessee sophomore Michael Ayers was named Southeastern Conference Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Ayers posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5,590 points en route to winning the Clemson JRF Multi-Event Challenge over the weekend. His point total was a career-high and ranks as the fourth-highest heptathlon score in the NCAA this season. He also moved from 10th to fifth on UT's all-time top-10 list in the event.
The Nashville, Tenn., native rode career bests in the 60m and the pole vault to victory over 15 other competitors from several SEC and ACC schools. Ayers posted a time of 7.11 in the 60m to open the competition on Friday then cleared 5.10m (16-8.75) in the pole vault during the second day of competition on Saturday.
Ayers finished third in the heptathlon at the 2008 SEC Indoor Championships and in the decathlon at the 2008 SEC Outdoor Championships. He went on to earn All-America honors with his 12th-place finish in the decathlon at the NCAA Championships.
Tennessee travels to New York, N.Y., for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center on Feb. 6-7.
