ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Former Vol Jebreh Harris has been named assistant cross country and track & field coach at South Carolina State University, the school announced recently. Harris officially began his duties on February 1.

Harris joined the S.C. State staff after serving the past five seasons (2004-09) as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Tennessee. While at UT, Harris also served several years as a coach with the Knoxville Track Club, working with the youth program. He also spent time as a sport-specific personal trainer (Performance Training Inc.), where he trained several world class athletes and designed workouts for clients with particular needs.

Harris had an outstanding collegiate career while competing at the UT. He was a two-time All-American (distance medley relay, 4x400mR) and was a member of the 2001 SEC and NCAA Outdoor Championship Teams, running the 800m and 4x400m relay for the Vols.

After Harris completed his collegiate career, he went on have a lucrative pro-career, signing with the Holyfield International Track Club (owned by professional boxer Evander Holyfield) and later with Reebok in 2005. As a professional, Harris was a 2004 and 2008 Olympic Trials finalist in the 800 meters.

In 2007 he ranked as high as No. 2 in the USA in the 800 meters by Track & Field News, and in 2006 he placed third at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in the 800 meters and was a member of the American-record-breaking 4x800-meter relay team (7:02.82-Brussels). Harris had a personal best time of 1:45.5 in 800m. In his years at UT and his pro career, Harris was coached by George Watts, associate head coach and leader of the men's distance and cross country programs at Tennessee.

Harris earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from the UT in 2002. He is a member of the USA Track & Field Association and holds several certifications, including USATF Level I certification and CPR/AED certification, and is currently studying for his International Sport Science Association (ISSA) certification.
