Track Wraps Up Competition at VT Challenge

The third-ranked Tennessee men’s track and field team concluded its last meet of the indoor regular season by earning one personal-best mark and four season-best marks on Saturday at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va.

“We made some progress today,” head coach Bill Webb said. “Brenard (Wilson) jumped in his first meet since December. Nick Panezich was very close to getting a big throw. (Akeem) Hardnett improved in the triple jump. The 800 guys got a chance to run again and improved before conference. We are now focusing on the conference championships next week.”

Panezich extended his season-best mark by more than seven inches while logging a new indoor personal-best mark in the shot put with a 56-8 3/4, third-place finish. Junior Akeem Hardnett recorded a season-best leap in the triple jump as he placed sixth with his mark of 49-1 3/4. Sophomore Brenard Wilson tied his season-best clearance of 6-4 1/4 in only his second high jump competition of the season. Junior Richard Wooten finished sixth in the shot put with his toss of 54-2 3/4.

Senior Yarrick Kincaid led Tennessee’s middle-distance contingent with his season-best time of 1:51.08 which was good for third in the 800. The Knoxville native was followed by freshman Axel Mostrag in fourth in 1:52.08 and senior Andrew Dawson in seventh with his time of 1:52.73. Senior Paul Cross stopped the clock in 1:57.04 and sophomore Justin Hansen finished in 1:57.33.

Senior Matt Piccarello finished the mile in 4:19.46 and was followed closely by freshman Mike Brodsky, who stopped the clock in 4:20.66. Junior Andrew Press ran to a personal-best mile time of 4:23.62 and senior Brent Smith finished in 4:25.65. Freshman Michael Spooner ran his first collegiate mile in 4:34.50. Freshman Chris Rapp finished the 3,000 in 8:50.23.

Tennessee returns to the track next weekend to compete for the school’s 19th conference indoor crown at the SEC Indoor Championships. The conference championship meet runs Friday through Sunday and is hosted by the University of Arkansas.
