Tracksters wrap up first day at NCAAs

The Tennessee men???s track and field team posted a solid first day of competition Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on the campus of Drake University. The Vols advanced four athletes and the 4x100 relay team past the first round in four different events.

???We had a mixed day, which can happen here,??? head coach Bill Webb said. ???Jangy and Joe, along with Yarrick, are leading us into the second day. Our 4x100 did a nice job as well. We had a couple of near misses and that???s unfortunate, but it happens at this meet. We will be ready to go tomorrow. We are competing well, but we did not get lucky in semifinals of the 100. I???m proud of the way Jangy and Mike Ayers competed today in the decathlon. We had a lot of action for day one and look forward to the rest of the meet.???

The meet was delayed at 10:20 a.m. Central Time following the conclusion of the decathlon 100 because of lightning in the area. The thunderstorms that followed forced a two-hour and 40-minute delay before competition could be resumed at 1 p.m.

Team captain Jangy Addy is second after day one of the decathlon with 4,238 points. The senior from Norcross, Ga., began his day with a 10.87 clocking in the 100 as the rain began to fall. After the delay, Addy had a season-best leap of 23-11 3/4 in the long jump before recording a mark of 50-2 3/4 in the shot put. Addy ended the day with a season-best 6-5 high jump clearance and a 48.92 clocking in the 400.

Freshman Michael Ayers has 3,703 points and is 13th in the decathlon after the first five events. The Nashville native started his first national championship competition with an 11.17 run in the 100 before long jumping 21-10. Ayers then recorded a shot put mark of 41-2 1/2 and cleared the high jump bar at 6-1 1/2 before running a time of 49.87 in the 400.

Tennessee???s 4x100 relay team of Blake Jones, Evander Wells, Kyle Stevenson and Rubin Williams advanced to Friday???s final with the third-fastest time of the semifinal in 39.24. Williams, a 14-time All-America finished ninth in the semifinals of the 100 after winning his heat in the first round with a 10.50 clocking. Wells, a four-time All-America, finished fourth in his heat in the 100 semifinals with his time of 10.50 after running the straightaway in 10.55 during the first round. Both runners missed qualifying for the eight-man final by one-hundredth of a second as the top-three from each heat and the next two fastest times were admitted to Friday???s final.

All-America Yarrick Kincaid advanced to Thursday???s semifinal round in the 800 with his round one time of 1:49.33, which placed third in his heat. Freshman Joseph Berry advanced to Friday???s pole vault final with his 17-2 3/4 clearance in the qualifying round. All-America Matthew Maloney failed to advance out of the qualifying round in the javelin with his 194-4 throw.

The decathlon concludes Thursday beginning with the 110 hurdles, which are scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. Eastern Time start. In addition to the decathlon, the Vols have competitors in the 200, 800 and 110 hurdles on Thursday. Live results can be found at UTsports.com.
