The Tennessee men’s track and field team earned another All-America certificate Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, as the 4x100 relay team claimed the Vols’ third such honor of this year’s championships.
Tennessee scored in the 4x100 relay for the seventh time in the last eight outdoor seasons. The Vols’ quartet of Matthieu Pritchett, Evander Wells, Kyle Stevenson and Rubin Williams earned All-America honors for the second year in a row with a fifth-place, 39.19 showing. Williams, who also earned All-America honors in the 100 as the eighth American, earned the 16th All-America certificate of his career and strengthened his spot as Tennessee’s most-decorated All-America.
“I want to congratulate the 4x100 for getting All-America,” head coach Bill Webb said. “It’s not where they hoped to finish, but we had an injury earlier in the year and it was our best guess about the best team (to run in the final). We lost timing on the handoff. Joe Berry just missed scoring. There were swirling winds during the competition and he was unlucky. Charlton Rolle got some good NCAA experience under his belt.”
Freshman Joseph Berry finished in a three-way tie for 10th in the pole vault. The SEC and Mideast Region champion vaulted over the bar at 16-8 3/4 in his first national championship meet. Fellow freshman Charlton Rolle did not advance to the final in the 110 hurdles after crossing the finish line in 14.00 during the semifinal.
With 12 events scored, Tennessee is tied for 12th with 12 points. The Vols end the four-day national championship meet Saturday with Yarrick Kincaid in the 800 final at 4:12 p.m. Eastern time and Wells and Williams in the 200 final at 4:44 p.m. CBS is slated to provide live coverage of the meet from 4-6 p.m. Live results can be found throughout the day at UTsports.com.
