KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee will be well-represented by present and future members of the Big Orange track & field program this weekend, as the USA Junior Outdoor Championships are contested June 15-17 in Bloomington, Ind.
The cream of the crop of American junior athletics, including the best high school athletes and the top collegiate freshmen, will be compete at Indiana University's Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University, Friday through Sunday. The meet will serve as a qualifier for this year's IAAF World Junior Championships. Top performers will be part of the American team that will compete in Barcelona, Spain, from July 10-15.
Current Tennessee freshmen expected to compete at USA Juniors include Tyler Anderson in the men's long jump (24-5.75/7.46m), Amirah Johnson in the women's 1500m (4:35.34), Kyle Walter in the men's 1500m (3:56.85) and Michael Williams in the men's 400m hurdles (52.97).
There will be four UT signees in action as well. That list includes Jacob Blankenship in the men's pole vault (17-6.50/5.35m), Cameron Brown in the men's hammer throw (195-6/59.59m), Felicia Brown in the women's 200 (23.59) and 400 meters (53.53), and Cassie Wertman in the women's shot put (51-0.50/15.55m).
In action in Friday finals are Brown in the men's hammer, Blankenship in the men's pole vault and Anderson in the men's long jump. Taking part in preliminary round races are Williams in the men's 400m hurdles, Walter in the men's 1500m run and Johnson in the women's 1500m run.
Saturday features prelims for Brown in the women's 200 and 400 meters. If Williams advances, the 400m hurdles final takes place as well.
Sunday's slate includes Wertman in the women's shot put final and potential finals for Brown in the women's 200 and 400 meters and potential finals for Walter and Johnson in the 1500 meters.
