Tennessee rising sophomore Joseph Berry tied for seventh in the pole vault Saturday at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, posting a final height of 16-8 ?? along with Japan???s Hiroki Sasase. Germany???s Raphael Holzdeppe won the event after clearing 18-0 ??.
Berry entered the competition at 16-4 ?? and cleared that height on his first attempt. It took him two attempts to clear 16-8 ?? before he failed to get over the bar at 17-0 ?? in three tries and was eliminated from the competition.
The Horsham, Pa., native won pole vault events six times during the 2008 collegiate season, including at the SEC Championships and the NCAA Mideast Regional. His career-best vault is 17-9, which he cleared at the regional.
Berry earned his trip to the World Championships by winning the USA Junior Championships in June. He also won an AAU National Championship in 2007.
The IAAF World Junior Championships feature athletes who are at least 14 years old at the time of competition but do not turn 20 during the calendar year.
