Former Vol Helwick Helps US to Thorpe Cup Victory

Former Tennessee decathlete Chris Helwick (2004-07) posted a career-best score of 8,143 to finish fourth individually and help the United States to a win over Germany in the Thorpe Cup, held August 2-3 at Kansas State University.

The Thorpe Cup is an annual team decathlon competition between the United States and Germany. Seven representatives from each country compete individually and the top five individuals for each nation count toward a team total. The USA won the 2008 competition 40,093 to 38,496 and has now won 12 of 15 Thorpe Cups overall.

What made the performances of Helwick and Team USA remarkable is that the competition was held in 104-degree weather Saturday and 114-degree weather Sunday.

???I couldn???t be happier for Chris,??? Tennessee track and field coach Bill Webb said. ???He has been through a devastating injury and an operation on his injured foot. He and I?talked that he would soon be able to put up this kind of score, so I???m not surprised. The conditions he had to compete in make the feat all the more special.???

Helwick was a seven-time All-America honoree and still holds the school record in the heptathlon at 5,917 points. He set that mark at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Helwick???s best mark in the decathlon at Tennessee was 7,780 points.
