ORLANDO, Fla. -- Since 1943, Balfour has been making championship rings. On Wednesday at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes, a representative of the Austin, Texas-based company bestowed some of Balfour's NCAA "victory bling" upon the University of Tennessee track & field staff.
In town for the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Convention, UT Director of Track & Field J.J. Clark and throws coach John Frazier accepted the celebratory jewelry on behalf of 2009 NCAA Indoor Champion Tennessee Lady Volunteers. Clark, who now leads a combined track & field program at Rocky Top after guiding the Lady Vols for seven seasons, and Frazier, who is men's and women's throws coach after only working with the Big Orange women in the past, saw UT honored for the second time in five years. The Lady Vols claimed the national indoor title in 2005 as well.
As a whole, the Tennessee track & field program has won seven national championships. In addition to the 2005 and 2009 NCAA Indoor crowns, the Lady Vols added an AIAW Outdoor title in 1981, while the men's team captured top honors outdoors in 1974, 1991 and 2001, and indoors in 2002.
The UT track & field teams open their 2010 campaign on Jan. 15-16, as they travel to Lexington, Ky., for the Kentucky Invitational.
