KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- If the 26th annual Pilot Fireball Moonlight Classic 5K race is any indication, University of Tennessee runner Michael Spooner is putting himself in position for a strong final season. The rising Vol senior held off a challenge over the final 100 meters Saturday night to claim victory in the local road race in a time of 15 minutes, 12 seconds.

Spooner, who runs cross country and track for the Big Orange, averaged 4:53 per mile en route to the win. Michael Deren and UT teammate Steve Fassino gave Spooner some company for the first couple of miles before settling for second and third, respectively, in 15:17 and 15:26. Former Vol Stewart Ellington also was among the leaders during the first two miles. He wound up fifth in 15:40, while Chris Kane, who recently finished his eligibility, was seventh in 16:06. There were 954 entrants in the race, which is organized by the Knoxville Track Club.
