Sept. 21, 2001

ROCK HILL, S.C.--Tennessee tallied 176 points to finish fourth at the 8K Great American Cross Country Festival in Rock Hill, S.C., Friday night. The Vols put together a workmanlike effort in their first race with a full roster as the Tennesseans placed fourth in a field of 29 in tough, humid conditions.

"I was pleased with our competitive effort in our first time out as a full team," cross country coach George Watts said. "Ryan (Demers) ran a really nice race in his first competition as a Vol. We'll get better and improve with more races. A couple of guys went out too hard and it hurt them a little."

Captain Ryan Demers led the Tennessee contingent with a ninth-place, 24:38.6 finish from a field of 264. After leading the Vols two weeks ago at the UTC Invitational, Tim Kelly remained solid with a 17th-place, 24:51.3 finish. Rob Cloutier took 54th (46th for scoring purposes) in 25:47.4. Scott DeFilippis followed in 55th place (47th for scoring purposes) in 25:48.6.Keith Kimmons rounded out the Vol scoring top five with his 26:01.5 clocking to take 65th (57th for scoring purposes). Tennessee’s scoring top-five runners managed a spread of 1:22.9 between its Nos. 1 and 5 runners.

Steve Klein (79th, 26:14.3) and freshman Matthew Lapp (118th, 26:48.7) arrived at the finish line next for the Vols. Clay Wiggins (120th, 26:52.2), Colin Rochford (169th, 27:46.5) and Paul Hallman (179th, 27:59.4) wrapped up the Vol effort.

N.C. State walked away victors with a 34-point compilation. Michigan’s Alan Webb took the individual title by breaking the tape in 24:05.2.

Tennessee returns to action Sept. 29 at the Auburn Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
