Vols Fourth At Covered Bridge Open

The Tennessee men’s cross country team placed fourth with 107 points Friday at the 8K Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C.

“Denton Jones did a nice job leading the team today,” head coach George Watts said. “I was pleased by Andrew Press’ first collegiate race in a couple of years. Matt Piccarello was steady as our third man. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but fortunately it’s only August 31st and we have plenty of time to train and meet our goals for the season. We look forward to hosting our home meet in two weeks and expect some nice competition.”

Florida State, last year’s South Region champion, won the race with 25 points. The Seminoles were followed by host Appalachian State’s 68 points and Georgia’s 92 points.

Jones, a junior who attended Knoxville Webb High School, crossed the finish line in 25 minutes, 55.19 seconds to place 10th in the individual standings. Press, a junior transfer from William & Mary running his first race as a Vol, finished 14th in 26:03.21. Piccarello was close behind, finishing in 26:06.10 as the senior earned a 19th-place finish.

Junior Steve Tobin was the fourth Vol to cross the finish line, stopping the clock at 26:48.34 for 37th place. Freshman Michael Spooner earned the fifth and final scoring spot for Tennessee with his 44th-place, 27:06.83 finish. Sophomores Chris Rapp and Chris Kane rounded out Tennessee’s top seven. Rapp placed 45th in 27:10.47 while Kane finished 47th with his time of 27:20.15.

Tennessee takes next week off before returning to host the UT Invitational on Sept. 14. The 8K race will be held at Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville and is scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m. Eastern Time.
