Sept. 15, 2005

Seniors Matthew Lapp and Zach Sabatino have been selected as team captains for the 2005 cross country squad. They were chosen by vote of their teammates.

Lapp casts a long shadow in the legacy of Volunteer captains, having been so honored four times in his career. Lapp was selected captain three times by the cross country squad (2003, 2004, 2005) and once by track and field squad (2005). The Coatesville, Pa., native missed the 2004-05 cross country and track season after sustaining injuries in a traffic accident prior to last year's cross country season opener. However, Lapp has been declared fit for duty and should find his way into Tennessee's scoring pack this season.

Sabatino is a first-time choice for captain. With the exception of one race, the Charleston, W.Va., native led Tennessee in each cross country meet in which he competed. Sabatino earned All-SEC and All-South Region acclaim by leading the Volunteers across the line in each championship meet. Sabatino also played a valuable role on the track team last season. He holds team-leading times in the 3,000 (8:08.24), steeplechase (8:49.84) and 10,000 (29:16.85).
