Sophomore cross country runner Daniel Tobin will toe the dew-dampened starting line Saturday morning with his Tennessee teammates at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. His older brother, Steven, won't physically be at Harry Pritchett Running Park, but chances are his presence will be felt as Daniel bursts into motion at the sound of the starter's pistol and navigates the 8000-meter course.
Steven ran cross country and track & field for the Vols from 2005-09, earning All-SEC distinction on the trails in 2007. Though he graduated and left the hallowed hills of Rocky Top, he continues to impact the program through the advice and support he provides his younger brother, sometimes the night before a race.
Even before their glory days at West Springfield High School in Springfield, Va., Daniel says Steven has always been someone who has encouraged and helped his younger sibling try to be more accomplished than he was, rather than trying to maintain his status as the better of the two. That selfless, brotherly love and Vol spirit seems to be working - for the Tobins and Tennessee.
It helped Daniel earn SEC All-Freshman Team honors a year ago and perform at his best in the team's final two meets of the season, the SEC Championships and the NCAA South Regional. The Big Orange sophomore, who has thus far counted toward UT's scoring total in one of three meets in 2011, said he always has been someone who puts all the pieces together for the postseason races.
As Daniel prepares for the "championship season" with one final tune-up race on Saturday, take a look at the video and hear how important "UT Family Ties" are to Daniel Tobin.
