UT-Auburn Post Game Quotes

Jan. 23, 2011

Recap |  Box Score |  Notes

Head Coach Pat Summit

Opening statement...

"I thought our team came ready to play. You never know when you are on the road and in this environment. I was very pleased with our intensity, commitment to playing defense and rebounding the ball. We had a lot of good hustle plays. It was a really good effort overall against a very good Auburn team. Anytime you go on the road and you don't pack your defense and board play you can lose at any given time and I think our team has finally bought into that. It was good to see Vicki Baugh come in and play the minutes she played. We got a number of good things from a number of different players. I think our depth has really contributed to the success we have had. Also this team is very unselfish and very committed to defense and the boards."

On front-court play...

"We went inside and that was key for us. I felt that we have such a size advantage that it would be a good part of our scheme and the team responded very well."

On Vicki Baugh...

"It was good to see her play today. She can definitely be a difference-maker on this team. I like the quality minutes that she got."

On the team's depth...

"Going in I was hoping that our depth would be a factor, but it is a wait-and see-situation. I liked what I saw so we used a number of rotations, getting people quality minutes. Kamikio Williams, I was very pleased with her minutes and did a lot of good things as well. We had good balance, so we didn't have to play players as long as we have. Thirteen boards for Glory Johnson was good and Kelly Cain was all over the glass and was very mobile and moved very well."

On impressions of the new arena...

"I like it and it is a great crowd. It is a really good environment. It is also the ideal size. It is really impressive."

On 12 steals...

"We had our hands up and got a lot of tips and that is where you have to be aggressive. We worked a lot on having high hands and clogging the lanes. We are not always as efficient as I like, but this game we were explosive from the begging and we stayed on point the entire game. We played great basketball and great defense."

Auburn Head Coach Nell Fortner

Opening Comments...

"I think Tennessee is really good. I think they're definitely one of the top five teams in the country, and there playing a style of basketball that's really tough to guard. It wears you out, and then they keep bringing players up off the bench, that continue to put the pressure on you. I thought our transition defense wasn't good today, which lead to about 18 points for them today. We've got some work to do to stay in a ball game with them, for sure."

On the first half...

"We just couldn't find the basket. They're big. It's hard to see over them and see around. It's also hard to play against a switching man defense, especially when everyone looks the same, as far as their size. It made it very difficult for us to find shots."

On the second half...

"We hit shots. We starting knocking shots down. When you play against them, you've got to make them pay for their defensive mistakes. The run was nice, but when we cut it to 10 we didn't show a lot of poise to make it a ball game. We turned the ball over three times in a row and then we didn't take good shots. All of a sudden, Tennessee was laying it up again."

On Shekinna Strickland...

"She's such a good scorer. She's got great range on her 3, and she's so powerful. She can play anywhere on the floor. During every timeout we have to figure out where Strickland is going to be, and what position she's going to play coming out of the timeout huddle. She plays every position. She's a nice player."

On preparing for South Carolina...

"We need to shoot the ball better and we have been. We were challenged today. We just need to get back to knocking shots down and I thought we had some good shots at the beginning of the game."

Tennessee Player Quotes

25, Glory Johnson, F, Jr.

On utilizing size advantage...

"I think it was clear that we had the size advantage. Whenever we use it to the best of our ability we normally dominate. Having everyone crash the boards on the rebounds and put backs it's amazing."

On comfort level...

"I was just thinking I had to stay balanced and I knew the more I practiced consistently, it would show up in the game, I've been practicing and haven't had to sit out in a while and I think it made a difference."

40, Shekinna Stricklen, PG, Jr.

On Tennessee's imposing frontline...

"Well, they pick on me a lot anyway. I think our front line, we're doing really well, especially on the boards now that we have Vicki (Baugh) and Alyssia (Brewer) back and they're coming in and they just fit in right with us. I think we're doing really well. Glory with a double-double, getting the points, the put-backs, and Kelly dominating, I just think we're dominating. Our height is a big advantage."

On having Vicki Baugh back...

"We see her every day, especially last year she was in the training room at least three or four times a day, rehabbing. She was encouraging and just seeing her work hard to get back, and finally getting to see her play with the confidence. She came in and scored nine points in seven minutes or something like that and that's great. When she gets her confidence and keeps building it up, I think that's going to be another factor for other teams to guard. I just say teams better watch out."

21, Vicki Baugh, F, Jr.

On confidence level... "I think I was very confident tonight, I wasn't thinking about my knee. I don't feel anything when I was jumping, I just think this is really going to help as far as a confidence builder."

Auburn Player Quotes

5 Alli Smalley, G, Sr.

On attacking a team with as much size as Tennessee...

"We are not used to playing teams with that kind of size. They are long and when they slow us down in their press, we lost our flow a little bit, so we were not just knocking down shots when we getting open looks."

On number of people who were here from her hometown of Arab, Alabama...

"I think a bunch of people from Arab came today. I know a lot of my family was here, but I think a lot of Arab people came, too."

On what the Auburn freshmen can learn from this game...

"You can always learn a lot when you play against Tennessee. It is hard to be thrown in there as a freshman against Tennessee, but I think one of the things we struggled with today was keeping that poise and that is one of the things freshmen have to learn because I looked one time and there were four freshmen on the floor with a junior. That is tough, but I feel they are only going to learn from that experience. "

On freshmen struggling in the SEC...

"Game-in and game-out in this league you have tough competition, it's physical and that's just something you have got to learn and get used to. Each year you are going to get better and get more comfortable playing against it."

On putting this game behind them and getting ready for their next game against South Carolina next Sunday...

"I think we can definitely learn a lot from this game because we have talked about things that we could have done better that we discussed before the game that we did not execute when we got out there. We can learn from that, but at the same time, we still have to look ahead and get ready for South Carolina."

On having a week to prepare for South Carolina...

"I think everyone is looking forward to a bye week. We can get our legs back and get our focus back for the next game, so we can get some good rest this week in preparation."

On what Auburn needs to do to put itself in position to win the South Carolina game...

"I think we just need to prepare this week the same that we do for any game, just practice, watch film and figure out their strengths and weaknesses and play to those."

On what Tennessee did to beat Auburn in the transition game...

"They just get it out so fast. As soon as the ball is off the rim, they grab it and they are gone and (Meighan) Simmons, their point guard, is extremely quick. She is the one that generates that transition offense for them and she does a great job of doing that getting it up the floor and finding the right person."
