BOX SCORE

LONDON -- After struggling early on against Croatia in their opening contest of the 2012 Olympics on Saturday, the USA women's basketball team bounced back with a dominant effort on Monday evening, cruising past Angola, 90-38, in a Group A Preliminary Round game at Olympic Park Basketball Arena.

Former Lady Vol Candace Parker recorded her second-straight game with a double-double, posting game highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds to send the Americans to their 35th-consecutive win in Olympic competition. The 6-foot-4 Parker hit seven of 10 shots from the floor and added a U.S. Olympic women's record of four blocked shots, plus two assists, in 23 minutes of action. Another UT product, Tamika Catchings, tallied seven points, seven boards, two blocks and a pair of steals in 16 minutes, as the USA moved to 2-0 in Group A play with a much stronger showing than it displayed in its opener.

Team USA burst out to a 22-12 lead and pushed the advantage to 41-18 at the half with Parker producing eight points and nine rebounds before heading into the locker room. The Americans, who shot 69 percent for the game, had their best offensive output in the third stanza, outscoring Angola, 28-11. They followed it with a 21-9 showing in the fourth stanza, with the Red, White and Blue finishing the contest with a 40-16 edge on points in the paint.

While they performed well offensively, the Americans also were stifling on defense against Angola, which is making its first appearance at the Olympics. The USA forced 21 turnovers and held their opponent to a dismal 23 percent marksmanship from the field. Team USA turned those Angola miscues into 23 points via fast breaks.

The USA will be back in action on Wednesday in another Group A Preliminary Round game. The Americans will engage in a second-straight 5:15 p.m. Eastern tip, this time facing Turkey in a rematch of a July 22 exhibition contest that the USA won, 80-61, in Istanbul.
