Game Notes: Carson-Newman, November 6, 2008 (Exhibition #1)

  • The 135 points are the second highest output by a Pat Summitt led team in exhibition play. The highest was a 144 point outing against Dynamo Kiev on Nov. 5, 2000.
  • The Lady Vols were in the bonus at the 15:31 mark of the first half.
  • From the 13:35 point in the first half until the 8:30 mark of the first half, the Lady Vols had five freshmen on the floor at once.
  • The Lady Vols opened with a 17-4 run, spurred by nine Kelley Cain points.
  • The largest Lady Vol lead of the first half was 38 at the 3:37 mark.
  • The Lady Vols held a 64-29 halftime lead, shooting 57.4% (27-of-47) from the field. UT held Carson-Newman to 33.3% (10-of-30) and only 1-of-9 from beyond the arc.
  • The Lady Vols scored 44 of their 64 first half points in the paint.
  • UT forced 14 first half turnovers and turned them into 19 points on the offensive end.
  • The first Lady Vol basket of the game came at 19:45 on a Kelley Cain layup; the first bucket of the second half came at the 17:23 mark on a Shekinna Stricklen put-back.
  • An Alicia Manning free throw at 8:07, her first free throw of the evening, put the Lady Vols over the century mark. UT has now broken the 100-point mark in four of the last five exhibition games against Carson-Newman.
  • Glory Johnson posted a double-double with 33 points and 14 rebounds, team-highs in both.
  • Alyssia Brewer earned a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, to go with seven steals.
  • Six Lady Vols (Gray, Johnson, Cain, Brewer, Stricklen and Manning) all finished with double-figure scoring.
  • The Lady Vols outscored Carson-Newman 80-14 in the paint and used 29 Lady Eagle turnovers to score 47 points. The deep Lady Vol bench contributed 86 points to the final margin.
  • The Lady Vols held Carson-Newman to 33.3% shooting for the game.

Freshman Shekinna Stricklen:
Stricklen made her first career shot - a 2-point field goal at the 18:12 mark
She finished with 17 points, six rebounds and six steals

Redshirt Freshman Kelley Cain:
Last year against Carson-Newman, Cain had 11 points and 12 rebounds
Kelley Cain had nine of the first 13 Lady Vol points
Cain had 18 first half points on 8-of-10 shooting
Cain also grabbed eight first half rebounds and nine for the game

Freshman Glory Johnson:
Made her first appearance at 15:54
Shot 66.6% (6-of-9) in the first half for 15 points
Posted a double-double with 33 points and 14 rebounds

Freshman Alicia Manning:
Made her first appearance at 14:37
Made her first two 3-point attempts, both coming in the second half
Her first free throw of the night at the 8:07 mark put the Lady Vols over the century mark

Freshman Alyssia Brewer:
Posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and added seven steals.
Made her first appearance at 14:13
Made her first career field goal attempt - a 2-pointer in the paint
Made her first three field goal attempts

Freshman Briana Bass:
Made her first appearance at 14:37

Freshman Amber Gray:
Made her first appearance at 12:51
Made her first career field goal attempt - a 2-point shot in the paint
Made her first three field goal attempts
Finished with 16 points coming off the bench

Sophomore Sydney Smallbone:
Made her first career start and scored six points
Hit the Lady Vols first three of the game at the 4:43 mark

Senior Alex Fuller:
Grabbed eight first half rebounds
