TENNESSEE HEAD COACH Holly Warlick
(On the game)
"I am kind of speechless. For us it was a tale of two halves."
(On the first half struggles)
"We weren't up on the ball. We were nervous. We were playing scared. They had a great game plan. We weren't hitting outside jumpers. If they are going to pack in the middle, we have to hit outside jumpers. You have to adjust, whatever the officiating is going to be."
(On the changes in the second half)
"In the second half, we did such a better job at defending. Andraya Carter stepped it up defensively, She's our defensive stopper. She got after No. 5 (Shanice Cason). They had to sub for her and we got on their next player. Andraya was the differences. She had huge 3s and played great on defense."
(On what surprised her in the second half)
"The only thing I was surprised by late was Mercedes (Russell) was 1-of-4 from free throws. It was nerves for everybody. Once we settled down and played our game. It was a hostile environment that was good for us."
(More on the first half)
"The first half, we weren't doing anything. We shot 27 percent in the first half. We were one shot and done. We were in foul trouble. We had four people on the bench with two fouls in the first half."
(On the officiating)
"If that's how they are going to call it, we have to adjust."
(On her halftime talk)
"We talked about (officiating changes) halftime. (Also Ebony) Rowe was scoring and getting rebounds and put backs. Carter keeping the ball on the left side of the floor, that made the differences for their offense. We forced them left in the second half. It started with Andraya and everyone else stepped up.
"We did a lot of high-low, we didn't do a lot in the first half. We started going down and when we get the ball inside its where we wanted to go. But man, we weren't every good in the first half. I was thinking, what am I doing here?"
(On her postgame)
"I went into the locker room and said, what was our record at this time last year? (0-1) We are 1-0, we will take it, we are 1-0 in a hostile environment."
(On North Carolina)
"I think North Carolina will be a little bit more of an up and down game. If its gets intro a free throw shooting contest, that's good for us. Its going to be a very athletic game. We have to shoot the ball better outside. Today is great teaching tape. We have to turn around and play a great North Carolina team "
JUNIOR GUARD Ariel Massengale
(On the game)
"It was difficult. All of the credit to MTSU. They scouted us well. It was a battle. We continued to play hard. This team showed great mental toughness. It was great to see this team fight tonight."
(On the officiating changes)
"Its difficult, especially when you are used to playing one day for such a long time. We have to learn from it. Its just going to take time"
(On the second-half surge)
"In the second half, we limited them to shooting 20 percent. Andraya Carter played a great with on ball pressure. When she gets ball pressure on that ball, it really helps. Her intensity and energy its unbelievable. She gets to the runs, you wouldn't want to play with a better person than Andraya."
(On the foul troubles)
"It was difficult. everyone stepped up late in the game. Izzy, Bashara, Mercedes all played well with a lot of fouls. They all stepped up."
(On looking ahead to North Carolina)
"Tonight showed that every time we step on the court its not going to be easy. The second half showed us how we needed to play for the full 40 minutes."
