TENNESSEE HEAD COACH Pat Summitt
(opening remarks) "I told our team that we had enough defense to have a few more possessions. We started with intensity, but we were not very productive. We had no organized offense. I was disappointed with the way our five players started out. I think you have to give Temple credit. They did a good job of controlling tempo and establishing what they wanted to establish. They went inside. We found a way to win. I'll take an ugly win. We've had a few of those already. We've got to knock down shots."
(on establishing the inside game) "We wanted to establish our inside game. I thought Nicky (Anosike) was anxious at the beginning of the game. We wanted to go inside off the dribble or the pass. Our offensive rebounding-for whatever reason, we were not covering the boards. I thought (Sybil) Dosty did a nice job. Sidney (Spencer) got in foul trouble. We haven't had consistency on the block. Loree (Moore) definitely rushed the offense in the first half. She did better in the second half."
(on offensive woes) "I asked the team after the game, 'Do you think you're getting good looks?' We've got to make shots. I don't know if it's that this is a new team and they've got to establish their roles and identity. If I had the answer, I'd tell them. I'd tell you so you could tell them to reinforce it. I thought against UTC, we were not as much in sync. We were better against North Carolina State. Today, we did some good things, but we still had a lot of breakdowns. We've got seven returning players. They should be able to show the new players how to play this game."
(on defensive effort) "I thought our defense down the stretch gave us opportunities to win. We responded with defense when we had to have a stop. When we had to have the ball back, we did just that."
(on Brittany Jackson) "Brittany was the one player that gave us stability and settled us down. She had a positive impact offensively, even if her shots weren't falling."
(on play on the offensive end) "We had some good series, some good looks. I thought (Sybil) Dosty executed well. We ran some different looks out of our motion. I encourage Loree (Moore) to push the tempo, but she rushed our offense. We had one bad spurt, but we did some good things. We just didn't make shots."
(on her defensive play toward the end of the game) "I thought I needed to do something. I wasn't producing offensively. I try not to let my offense dictate my defense. I wanted to do something to get momentum and energy."
(on missed shots) "Our shots are on the right track. It's just a few little things. They were good misses. We just have to get in the gym and work a little more."
(on how she responded to not starting) "I just wanted to support my team in any way that I could. I didn't want to step outside of myself. I wanted to handle it to the best of my ability. I wanted to get in and do what I didn't do to not be starting in the first place."
(on missed shots) "It wasn't that they were off. They were just long or short. Recently, we've had a lot of that. We just have to get in the gym and keep practicing. We can't dwell on it. In practice, we shoot well. We knock down shots. I don't know if it's a lack of focus."
(on Temple) "The coaches always give us a great scouting report. We know what to expect. It's just a matter of us executing."
(on the game's turning point) "Sybil (Dosty) did very well for us. She gave us a big lift offensively. Our press disturbed them and we were able to get some easy buckets. That helped shift momentum going into halftime."
TEMPLE HEAD COACH DAWN STALEY:
(on the game) "Our kids put our hearts on the line and almost came up with one of the biggest upsets in women's college basketball. We had ample opportunity to win the basketball game. I am very proud of our girls, it's not every day that you can come into a historical place like Knoxville and play a great game."
(On the defensive press) "We wanted to disrupt their offense. We want certain people to take shots that aren't comfortable taking shots. We pride ourselves on our defense."
(on the last shot) "You could say I felt a lot of things, I was excited and nervous and at the same time I saw (Brittany) Jackson coming toward me. I should have pump faked, I might have drawn the foul and had an 'and one'. You dream about taking that shot and it just didn't go down. It is upsetting, but they'll be another shot."
(on playing the top team in the country) "We can compete with anybody. They (Tennessee) put their shoes on one at a time just like everyone else. It is upsetting that we lost, but we will be back and we will get somebody."
