KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After earning the No. 1 seed by virtue of winning the program's 17th regular-season league women's basketball championship, ninth-ranked Tennessee will open play in the 2013 SEC Tournament in Duluth, Ga., at noon on Friday.
The Lady Vols (23-6/14-2 SEC) will play the winner of Thursday's No. 8 Arkansas (18-11/6-10) vs. No. 9 Florida (17-13/6-10) game. Friday's UT contest will be televised on SportSouth and carried on the Lady Vol Radio Network.
Led by first-year head coach Holly Warlick, Tennessee will attempt to claim the school's 17th overall SEC women's tourney title. The Lady Vols also are hoping to extend a three-year streak of winning postseason league crowns.
The Lady Vols are 69-17 all-time in 33 years of SEC Tournament play. UT will try to sweep SEC regular season and tournament titles in the same season for the ninth time. The Big Orange women most recently accomplished that feat in 2010 and 2011 and first did so back in 1980, which was the first year that the SEC offered championships for each and which also was Warlick's senior season at Tennessee.
The 2013 SEC Tournament will be hosted at The Arena at Gwinnett Center, which also played host to the event in 2007 and 2010. Tennessee was victorious the last time the tourney was played there.
