MOSCOW -- Tennessee's Cierra Burdick and her USA teammates will open play Thursday at the 2014 FIBA 3x3 World Basketball Championship in Russia.
Burdick (Charlotte, N.C.) and teammates Sara Hammond (Louisville/Mt. Vernon, Ky.), Jewell Loyd (Notre Dame/Lincolnwood, Ill.) and Tiffany Mitchell (South Carolina/Charlotte, N.C.) will face off vs. Hungary in Pool D preliminary round action at 5:40 p.m. Moscow time (9:40 a.m. ET). They also are slated to compete in a 7:40 p.m. (11:40 a.m. ET) contest vs. Brazil.
The tournament continues on Friday, as the Americans face Ukraine at 4:20 p.m. (8:20 a.m. ET) and Spain at 6:20 p.m. (10:20 a.m. ET) to close out pool play. Round of 16 and quarterfinal contests will be played on Saturday, followed by semifinals and finals on Sunday.
Burdick will be seeking her fourth international gold medal with USA Basketball. She previously played for the 2011 U19 World Championship, the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship and the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.
2014 marks the second edition for the biennial 3x3 world championship. At the inaugural 2012 FIBA 3x3 World Championship, which was held in Athens, Greece, the USA women's team, featuring Skylar Diggins, Bria Hartley, Chiney Ogwumike and Ann Strother, captured the gold medal with a perfect 9-0 record.
The second FIBA 3x3 World Championship is expected to feature 24 men's teams and 24 women's teams. In addition to the men's and women's 3x3 tournaments, included in the 2014 3x3 World Championship program for the weekend will be skills contests, giving athletes additional chances to win medals.
In addition to the USA Basketball 3x3 squad, nations competing for the 2014 3x3 World Championship gold medal will be: Andorra, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Guatemala, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, host Russia, Spain, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda and Uruguay.
