Catchings, Parker Chosen As WNBA ASG Starters

July 9, 2014

UT

NEW YORK -- A pair of Lady Vol greats have once again been voted by fans as starters in the upcoming 2014 Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star Game, which will be held July 19 at the US Airways Center in Phoenix. The contest will be televised on ESPN, with tip-off slated for 3:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever has been selected to start in the front court for the Eastern Conference, while Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks was chosen as a front court starter for the Western Conference.

The 2011 regular-season WNBA MVP and MVP of the 2012 WNBA Finals presented by Boost Mobile, Catchings has been voted as a starter for all nine All-Star contests played since her first active season in the WNBA (2002). Despite missing the first 17 games this season due to injury, Catchings was the fourth-leading vote-getter for the Eastern Conference with 13,939.

Parker, the 2013 regular-season MVP and MVP of the 2013 Boost Mobile All-Star Game, was picked to start for the third time in her career. She collected 23,555 votes to rank second in the Western Conference and fourth overall.

In two games this season, Catchings is averaging 14.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per contest. On Tuesday night, in just her second game back, she scored 23 points, including a tie-breaking basket with 5.2 seconds remaining, to lift Indiana to a 78-76 road victory at Tulsa.

In 18 games in 2014, Parker is averaging 20.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists per outing for the Sparks. She has five double-doubles this season, including season highs of 32 points and 12 rebounds at Washington on June 1.
