Jenny Moshak, University of Tennessee Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, announced this afternoon that Lady Vol basketball guard Kamiko Williams had undergone surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
Williams suffered the left knee injury on July 7 while playing in the Women's Pilot Rocky Top Basketball League at the Christian Academy of Knoxville. She was driving the baseline and went in for a reverse layup when the injury occurred.
"Drs. Greg Mathien and Russell Betcher, UT team orthopaedists, performed surgery on Kamiko's left knee this morning at UT Medical Center," said Moshak. "The reconstructive surgery addressed the ACL tear."
According to Moshak, Williams' surgery went well and she will begin rehabilitation immediately. "Kamiko worked really hard in rehab leading up to her surgery and I know she is focused on getting her knee back to 100 percent."
Williams, a rising 5'11" junior from Clarksville, Tenn., averaged 6.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg and 17.9 minutes per outing as a sophomore. She earned four starting assignments while playing all 37 games in the 2010-11 season.
