KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Lady Vol freshman point guard Ariel Massengale collected the first conference honors of her collegiate career Monday as she was named SEC Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week. The Bolingbrook, Il., native was recognized for her outstanding performance in UT's wins over Middle Tennessee and Texas.
Massengale averaged 12.0 ppg and 5.0 apg, giving up only one turnover while playing 25.0 minutes per game in the victories over the Blue Raiders and the Longhorns. Against Middle Tennessee on Tuesday, the 5-6 freshman starter posted her career best in points (14) and tied her best performance in rebounds (4), while committing zero turnovers in the 82-43 win.
Following her phenomenal game against the Blue Raiders, Massengale recorded her third double-digit scoring effort of the season in the 73-57 victory over Texas on Sunday. She finished with 10 points, five assists and two steals against the Longhorns.
On the season, Massengale is averaging 7.2 ppg and 5.8 apg for the No. 8-ranked Lady Vols. Despite early troubles with taking care of the ball, she has committed only two giveaways in the last three games, sporting a 7.0 assist to turnover ratio.
The Lady Vols do not have a game this week, but return to action against No. 22/21 DePaul on Dec. 11 at 1:30 p.m. in the Maggie Dixon Classic at Madison Square Garden. The game will air live on ESPNU.
