NEW YORK -- Tennessee Lady Vol head coach Pat Summitt and Duke Coach Mike Kryzewski were feted tonight in New York City at the IAC Building in Manhattan, being honored as SPORTS ILLUSTRATED's Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year.
Also sharing in the celebration were previously named SI Sportswoman and Sportsmen Chris Evert (1976), Sugar Ray Leonard (1981), Wayne Gretzky (1982), David Robinson (2003) and David Ortiz (2004).
Lady Vol alumna Michelle Marciniak introduced Coach Summitt and her stirring remarks prompted a standing ovation from the crowd, honoring Summitt.
During her comments Coach Summitt thanked the audience, Time, Inc., and SPORTS ILLUSTRATED for one of the greatest awards given to her during her career.
"I just want to say what an honor it is to be a part of such a great award in the company of such amazing people and remarkable sports legends," Summitt said.
She was followed at the podium by son Tyler, a junior at UT, who addressed the gathering about the Pat Summitt Foundation and the vision the duo has for the fund.
Also on hand to celebrate the night were UT Chancellor Dr. Jimmy Cheek, Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Dave Hart, Director of Women's Athletics Joan Cronan and SEC Commissioner Mike Slive.
The evening included a walk of the red carpet as well as photo sessions with the previously named Sportspeople of the Year.
With tonight's recognition, Summitt and Krzyzewski join UCLA's John Wooden (1972) and North Carolina's Dean Smith (1997) as the only collegiate coaches to earn SI's most distinguished honor.
