KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Lady Vol freshman basketball player Meighan Simmons was selected as the CAREacter Star Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
The CAREacter Program is based on a five-point star system that includes the basic traits of a true champion, whether on or off the field. Those traits are attitude, character, grades, community service and performance.
Simmons, a 5-9 guard from Cibolo, Texas, is averaging a Lady Vol best 17.4 ppg and has scored in double figures in the first 11 games of her collegiate career. Only Chamique Holdsclaw accomplished that feat more times to start her Lady Vol career, tallying 14 straight double-figure contests at the start of the 1995-96 season.
On Dec. 1, Simmons set a Lady Vol record by burying eight three-pointers in a 99-55 win over Lamar in Knoxville.
In the two-game Texas road swing from Dec. 12-14, Simmons averaged 20.0 ppg as Tennessee split versus No. 21/24 Texas (92-77) and No. 2/3 Baylor (54-65).
The Lady Vols return to action this Sunday when No. 3/2 Stanford travels to Thompson-Boling Arena for a 7 p.m. tilt on ESPN2.
