The No. 8 University of Tennessee Lady Vol golf team opened up the 2003 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge presented by The Ohio State University in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., with a 32-over 316 to close out the first round in 16th-place. UT is currently 32 strokes off the leader, Pepperdine, which fired an even-par 284 for the day. Individually, UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas jumped out to the pole position with a 3-under 68 on the par-71, 5,912-yard layout.
Team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario) paced the orange-clad contingent with a 5-over 76, which was good enough to open the tournament tied for 28th-place. Freshmen Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) and Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) accounted for the next best UT scores as Johansson fired an 8-over 79 to tie for 57th-place, while Retamoza posted a 62nd-place tying 9-over 80. Juniors Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) and Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) rounded out the Lady Vol effort. Perry tied for 67th-place with a 10-over 81, while Fernandez shot a 15-over 86 to tie for 88th-place.
The Lady Vols are facing their stiffest competition to date this week as the
Regional Challenge features six of the top 10 squads in the country (No. 1
Arizona, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 6 Texas, No. 8 Tennessee, No. 9 Southern
California and No. 10 Florida) and a total of 14 of the Top 25 ranked
schools in the nation (No. 11 California, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 15
Pepperdine, No. 16 Purdue, No. 19 Tulsa, No. 21 Georgia, No. 22 Oklahoma and
No. 24 UCLA). The Big Orange holds a .461 winning percentage against the
18-team field. UT also owns a winning record against eight tourney
UT continues the spring season in Tucson, Ariz., Feb. 24-26, when the Lady Vols compete in the Arizona Wildcat Invitational.
