The No. 8 University of Tennessee Lady Vol golf squad blasted away any off-season rust en route to the third-best round of the day at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The Big Orange finished the day in ninth-place with a 625 (316-309) to vault seven slots from a first-round 16th-place finish, while also shaving five strokes off Pepperdine's leading pace of 598 (284-314). Pepperdine's Katherine Hull completed the second round with a 144 (69-75) to hold onto a one shot lead on the par-71, 5,912-yard layout.
Team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario) concluded the day only eight shots out of the lead pace with a 13th-place tying 152 (76-76) to move up 15 positions, while freshmen Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) and Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) fired a pair of 157s to tie for 35th. Junior Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) closed out scoring for UT with a 159 (81-78) to tie for 47th, while fellow junior Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) rounded out the orange-clad effort with a 167 (86-81) to finish in a 75th-place tie.
The Lady Vols are facing their stiffest competition to date this week as the
Regional Challenge features six of the top 10 squads in the country (No. 1
Arizona, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 6 Texas, No. 8 Tennessee, No. 9 Southern
California and No. 10 Florida) and a total of 14 of the Top 25 ranked
schools in the nation (No. 11 California, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 15
Pepperdine, No. 16 Purdue, No. 19 Tulsa, No. 21 Georgia, No. 22 Oklahoma and
No. 24 UCLA). The Big Orange holds a .461 winning percentage against the
18-team field. UT also owns a winning record against eight tourney
UT continues the spring season in Tucson, Ariz., Feb. 24-26, when the Lady Vols compete in the Arizona Wildcat Invitational.
