TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Senior Erica Popson fired a 1-under par 71 in the final round of the Florida State Match-Up, finishing with a 54-hole card of 214 (-2) to tie for first in Tennessee's first tournament of the spring. Popson paced the Lady Vols to a third-place showing, with a final total of 882 (+18).

"It felt great to get a win in my home state and to start off the spring semester," Popson said. "We played great today as a team and hope to keep it going throughout the rest of the season."

The Davenport, Fla., product earned her eighth individual title as a Lady Vol. Popson and junior Chessey Thomas recorded 13 birdies apiece throughout the tournament, the most of any player at the event. Thomas finished in a tie for eighth after shooting even-par 72 in the final round. She finished 2-over par 218.

"We played pretty solid today, had the second low round of the day by quite a few shots," head coach Judi Pavon said. "Erica played well again and did what she needed to do to get the win, including making a clutch birdie on hole 3. Chessey played great, despite not putting her best. She managed to make a bunch of birdies to make up for any mistakes."

Along with Popson and Thomas, sophomore AJ Newell finished 13th, to top off the Lady Vols' three top-15 finishers. Newell was 2-over par 75 on the day, rounding out the tournament at 7-over 223 with eight birdies.

Senior Sara Monberg followed in a tie for 28th, after carding 2-over par 74 on the final day. She wrapped up the tournament with a 227 (+11) total. Sophomore Daeun Song shot 6-over par 78 to finish 56th with a 239 (+23) mark.

"A.J. got off to a rough start but hung in there and finished with three birdies in her last five holes," Pavon said. "Today, Sara was back to her old self and was very steady all round. Daeun didn't have her best week, but it was good to get that first tournament under belt and now she will know more what to expect in the future."

Tennessee shot the second lowest score of the day at 4-over. The Lady Vols finished five strokes off Georgia's winning score of 877 (+13). Oklahoma came in second, finishing 17-over 881.

"The third place was really our most solid tournament of the season so it's a good way to start the spring," Pavon said. "I'm proud of the players for getting their games in good shape when we've had such a cold winter."

Rounding out the rest of the field was Florida State (893), Furman (897) and Texas A&M (900) in the fourth through sixth slots. Notre Dame (906) followed in seventh, while UT-matched pair UTSA (909) came in eighth. Michigan (918) finished ninth, Kansas (921) came in 10th and UNC-Greenville (932) and UNC-Wilmington (937) wrapped up the competition in 11th and 12th spots, respectively.

The Lady Vols will return to action March 8-10 when they travel to Hilton Head, S.C., for the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
