TUCSON, Ariz. -- Freshman Sara Monberg carded a 3-over 74 to lead the No. 7-ranked Tennessee women's golf team on Monday during a wet and windy first day at the 2010 Wildcat Invitational.
The field of 16 was scheduled to play 36 holes on day one of the two-day tournament at the par-71 Arizona National Golf Course, but poor weather conditions cancelled the second round of play. The invitational will now be 36 holes - two rounds - with the final 18 scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. MT Tuesday. Live scores and results can be found at golfstat.com.
"The players did their best today in some bad weather," Lady Vol head coach Judi Pavon said. "It was really tough out there, but Sara Monberg and Nathalie Mansson both turned in respectable scores despite the conditions. We didn't finish off our round very well, but we're looking forward to a better day tomorrow."
In its first competition since October, Tennessee got off to a slow start as it tallied its highest 18-hole total of the season. The Lady Vols' first round score of 307 (+23) puts them in 10th place with a round to play.
No. 3 Arizona State (290) leads the field, which features 11 teams ranked in the Golfstat Top-25. No. 21 Stanford (293) and No. 16 Arizona (294), the tournament host, are second and third, respectively, on the leaderboard. The Lady Vols are three strokes away from eighth place and one stroke ahead of No. 2 and SEC-rival Auburn.
Monberg, who is tied for 13th, had a phenomenal finish to her opening round of the spring, carding back-to-back birdies to close out the day.
Sophomore Nathalie Mansson, ranked No. 14 in the Golfstat Cup individual rankings, fired a 4-over 75 and is tied for 22nd.
