TUCSON, Ariz.
Head Coach Judi Pavon's golf squad struggled out of the gates in its initial round of the spring season with a rain-soaked 11th-place showing by turning in a 324 in the 2004 Arizona Wildcat Invitational at the Arizona National Golf Club at Sabino Springs in Tucson, Ariz. Ohio State took a three stroke lead over UCLA with a 285, while the Bruins turned in a 288. OSU's Allison Hanna and California's Sarah Huarte ended the day tied for the lead with matching 68s.
As for the Big Orange, sophomore Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) carded a seven-over 78 to finished the round tied for 35th, while juniors Teesha Ash (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) and freshman Holly Cantwell (Morristown, Tenn.), playing as an individual, all tied for 50th with rounds of 81. Senior Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) ended up in a 65th-place tie with an 84, while sophomore Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) posted a 71st-place-tying 87.
UT continues play Tuesday with tee times dependant on first round results. Tennessee then concludes the event Wednesday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
