Head Coach Judi Pavon's golf squad turned in a solid effort during the first day of the 2004 SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational at the Florida University Club in Gainesville, Fla., by finishing the initial round in fourth place. The orange-clad linksters put together a 301 to close out the round. Top-ranked Duke holds the opening lead with a 292, while Michigan State and Ohio State are just two strokes ahead of the Lady Vols in a second-place tie with a pair of 299 totals. Spartan Allison Fouch owns the individual lead with the lone sub-par round of the day with a 69.
As for the Big Orange, sophomore Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) fired a two-over 72 to tie for second place, just three strokes off the lead pace, while senior Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) and team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) carded a pair of 76 totals to end up in a 16th-place tie. Sophomore Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden), playing as an individual, and senior Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) tied for 25th place with matching rounds of 77. Freshman Holly Cantwell (Morristown, Tenn.) rounded out the UT effort with an 86 to tie for 79th.
Next up, the Lady Vols are paired with what may end up being a final-day
flight at the SEC Tournament as Auburn and Vanderbilt tee off with Tennessee
on Monday, March 8 at 8 a.m. UT then concludes the Lady Gator with a shotgun
start on Tuesday, March 9 at 8 a.m.
